Darlene has been involved in the consumer movement since the late 1990s. She is an eminent advocate for health consumers with an excellent knowledge of the health system, both locally and nationally. Darlene has a strong, practical understanding of community engagement principles. She has been the Executive Director of Health Care Consumers’ Association Incorporated since 2008. She is also a board member of the ACT Council of Social Services.

Sandra joined HCCA in August 2012 as Administration Officer.  Sandra is responsible for managing HCCA’s membership, office administration duties, secretariat to the HCCA Executive Committee.  Sandra has also worked in the Consumer Representatives Program. Sandra is fluent in Spanish. She has a bachelor of Business Administration and is currently doing a Masters in Management at the University of Canberra. Sandra enjoys working at HCCA and learning about the consumers’ health movement in Canberra and the region.

Khalia started working for HCCA in Febuary 2014 as the Administration Assistant after graduating Year 12 in 2013. Khalia's role as Administration Assistant involves answering the phone, maintaining the administration email address and assisting other staff with their work where possible. Khalia is currently studying a Bachelor of Economics and Asian Studies at the Australian National University.

Caitlin joined Health Care Consumers Association in early 2012. Caitlin is currently Coordinator of the Consumer Representatives Program and is managing HCCA’s work with the ACT Community Services Directorate to evaluate the Strengthening Families Program. Caitlin strongly believes in the right for all consumers to be involved in their own health care and in decisions about our health system. Caitlin is also passionate about equitable access to services and respect for all members of our community. 

   


Kate Gorman

Consumer Representatives Program Project Officer

Kate started working at HCCA in February 2015 as a Project Officer on the Consumer Representatives Program. Health, and the way we experience health care, is an interest which has developed in recent years as she has supported family members needing treatment and care.  Since completing consumer representatives training in 2015, Kate has brought her experiences as a parent to committees relating to children’s health. She is greatly enjoying learning about advocacy and the role of consumer representatives in improving health care, and looks forward to working closely with HCCA’s consumer representatives for a busy year of consumer advocacy in 2016!

 Eleanor Kerdo

Eleanor Kerdo joined the HCCA team in February 2014. In her role as Policy Officer she will work with all members HCCA community to identify key issues for consumers in the area of health policy. Eleanor will also play a role in coordinating HCCA’s online presence and social media. Eleanor has a Bachelor of Science with Honours from Australian National University with a focus on health and infectious disease. Eleanor has experience in the community sector and has a passion for social justice and advocacy within health care and the community.

 


Kerry Snell

Kerry Snell

Kerry has worked with Healthcare Consumers ACT for 5 years. She currently leads the Health Infrastructure Program at HCCA and has previously coordinated the Consumer Representative Program and Consumer Rep training.

Kerry’s background is in teaching, having taught across the vocational and primary sectors both interstate and overseas. Kerry has tertiary qualifications in teaching, teacher librarianship, and training and workplace assessment. Before coming to HCCA Kerry managed the Volunteer Tutor Program at Cairns TAFE and was the Volunteer Coordinator for ACT and SE NSW for Vision Australia. She has held Board positions on the Canberra Blind Society, the Canberra Theatre Advisory committee, and the ACT Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women. Kerry is a passionate advocate for the rights of all people in the health sector. 

 


Nicholas Wales

Nick Wales joined HCCA in August 2014 as the Project Officer for the Health Infrastructure Program. Within this role Nick is responsible for the promotion of consumer engagement relating to the Health Infrastructure Program. This includes liaising with the ACT Government, providing support for Consumer Representatives and HCCA’s involvement with the Health Infrastructure Program. Nick has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Canberra and is currently studying a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning. Nick has a strong belief of the promotion and planning of healthier cities with the needs of the consumer in mind.

 


 Yelin Hung

Multicultural Liaison Officer

Yelin is fluent in Spanish and English and moved to Australia in 1997.  She has a Bachelor of Community Education with a major in Community Development from the University of Canberra. Currently, Yelin is the Multicultural Liaison Officer at the Health Care Consumers’ Association of the ACT (HCCA). Yelin has been working at HCCA since 2011, initially in an administrative capacity. In her role as Multicultural Liaison Officer, Yelin fosters networks with multicultural community organisations and diverse communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.  Yelin brings her personal experience and knowledge to enrich her work with the multicultural community sector, including her interest in supporting disadvantaged communities and her own understanding of being a migrant to Australia.

Christine joined HCCA in Jan 2015 as Coordinator of the Advance Care Planning Program 'A Conversation for Everyone.' Christine comes from a community sector background having worked across the lifespan in many and varied roles including Case Management, Training and Life Coaching.  She has a deep commitment to social justice, inclusion and savouring the many ridiculous moments in life.

 


 Nasreen Hafesjee

Nasreen joined HCCA in August 2014 to look after office administration duties. Since January 2016 she has been working with Christine Bowman in the Advance Care Planning Program delivering information sessions in Hindi. Nasreen has a Bachelor of Arts degree, a certificate in Community Services and training in many other community related areas. Nareen is fluent in English, Bengali, Hindi and German and can read French. She is also involved with community radio, launching the only women’s radio program in Canberra in 2011 and is the ACT Women’s Representative on the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasting Council.
