Darlene has been involved in the consumer movement since the late 1990s. She is an eminent advocate for health consumers with an excellent knowledge of the health system, both locally and nationally. Darlene has a strong, practical understanding of community engagement principles. She has been the Executive Director of Health Care Consumers’ Association Incorporated since 2008. She is Vice President of the ACT Council of Social Services.

Khalia started working for HCCA in Febuary 2014 as the administration assistant after graduating year 12 in 2013. She is currently on a Gap Year and is looking forward to working with HCCA before studying at the Australian National University in 2015. Khalia is responsible for managing HCCA’s membership, office administration duties as well as being the personal assistant of the Executive Director, Darlene Cox.

Caitlin joined Health Care Consumers’ Association in early 2012 to work on the Consumer Representatives Program. As Coordinator, Caitlin is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Program’s activities, as well as ensuring the Program continues to facilitate the representation of the consumer perspective on health service committees in Canberra and the region. Caitlin is currently studying at Australian National University and hopes to continue her career in community advocacy after she graduates.

Sandra joined HCCA in August 2012 as Administration Officer.  Sandra is responsible for managing HCCA’s membership, office administration duties, secretariat to the HCCA Executive Committee. This year Sandra has started working on the Consumer Representatives Program with Caitlin. Sandra is fluent in Spanish. She has a bachelor of Business Administration and is currently doing a Masters in Management at the University of Canberra. Sandra enjoys working at HCCA and learning about the consumers’ health movement in Canberra and the region.

Ali joined Health Care Consumers’ Association at the end of 2013 as the Administration Officer taking over Sandra’s responsibilities while she was away. This year, Ali will be the Administration Support for Caitlin on the Consumer Representatives Program. Ali is in her final semester of her double degree in Medical Science and Forensic Science and will be pursuing a career in law enforcement, focusing on the forensic aspect. In the meantime, she loves working at HCCA and enjoys learning about the consumers’ role within ACT Health.


Eleanor Kerdo

Eleanor Kerdo joined the HCCA team in February 2014. In her role as Policy Officer she will work with all members HCCA community to identify key issues for consumers in the area of health policy. Eleanor will also play a role in coordinating HCCA’s online presence and social media. Eleanor has a Bachelor of Science with Honours from Australian National University with a focus on health and infectious disease. Eleanor has experience in the community sector and has a passion for social justice and advocacy within health care and the community.

Kerry has worked with Healthcare Consumers ACT for 5 years. She currently leads the Health Infrastructure Program at HCCA and has previously coordinated the Consumer Representative Program and Consumer Rep training.

Kerry’s background is in teaching, having taught across the vocational and primary sectors both interstate and overseas. Kerry has tertiary qualifications in teaching, teacher librarianship, and training and workplace assessment. Before coming to HCCA Kerry managed the Volunteer Tutor Program at Cairns TAFE and was the Volunteer Coordinator for ACT and SE NSW for Vision Australia. She has held Board positions on the Canberra Blind Society, the Canberra Theatre Advisory committee, and the ACT Ministerial Advisory Committee on Women. Kerry is a passionate advocate for the rights of all people in the health sector.

Yelin is fluent in Spanish and English and moved to Australia in 1997.  She has a Bachelor of Community Education with a major in Community Development from the University of Canberra. Currently, Yelin is the Multicultural Liaison Officer at the Health Care Consumers’ Association of the ACT (HCCA). Yelin has been working at HCCA since 2011, initially in an administrative capacity. In her role as Multicultural Liaison Officer, Yelin fosters networks with multicultural community organisations and diverse communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.  Yelin brings her personal experience and knowledge to enrich her work with the multicultural community sector, including her interest in supporting disadvantaged communities and her own understanding of being a migrant to Australia.

Alan is currently working with HCCA part-time until July 2014 on a range of policy and planning projects. Alan has been a consumer representative for HCCA since 2004.  He was prompted to join HCCA after an incident at an Emergency Department which resulted in the inappropriate treatment, care and discharge of an elderly family friend.  He has served as a consumer representative on a number of committees since 2004 at both Calvary and Canberra hospital and the ACT Health Directorate.  Alan began his working life as an analytical chemist and has a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of NSW.  After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the ANU he joined the Australian Public Service in 1977.

Suzanne Eastwood has a Graduate Diploma of Community Development and a Diploma of Training and Assessments Systems. Suzanne worked as a Community Development Worker in Women's Refuges, Tenants Union Regional Coordinator, and as as a Youth Worker. Suzanne worked at DVCS in the Healthy Relationships Schools Program and as a Vocational Training Consultant and workshop facilitator. Suzanne has a special interest in working with the Social Determinants of Health. In 2010 to 2012 she facilitated workshops offering skills to smaller community organisation on tender writing and the “Empower” course for women from diverse backgrounds for the Women’s Centre for Health Matters. She is working part time at HCCA as a Project Consultant on the Health Literacy for All Health Promotion project.

Hayley is working with HCCA part time as our Health Literacy Support Officer. Hayley joined HCCA in 2012 after working together with Women Centre for Health Matters and HCCA on the ‘Empower’ workshops for women of diverse backgrounds. Hayley comes from a long family history in advocacy and has inherited her family’s thirst for change to improve the lives of the next generation. Hayley studied Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts and Business Administration, and as a mother of five children, has taken on a wide variety of roles including: referee, nurse, life coach, servant, Aboriginal health worker, art teacher, finance officer and more.
